I was looking at the Monk skills trying to come up with a build that I thought would work well.

    http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#UgXiTS!dWX!ZcbccZ

    I'm going for a Crit/Attack Speed/Dodge/AoE Hybrid w/ a bit of healing.

I'm only level 45 atm. My power supply melted a few days ago :(

I'm thinking Crit/Dex/Attack Speed/Vitality/Dodge will be my stat priority, but I'm new to the theory-crafting thing and haven't delved into what exactly each stat gives me yet.

#1 Crit: Need it to keep Blazing Fists up, Cyclones up, and to increase my Dodge via Sixth Sense.
#2 Dex: Primary stat and it will bolster my Armor via Seize the Initiative.
#3 Attack Speed: With Blazing Fists and Mantra of Retribution my base attack speed bonus will be +23%. I haven't hit end game so I'm unsure how easy it will be to get gear with +Attack Speed.
#4 Vitality: More Life is always good.
#5 Dodge: The Guardians Path will give me +15% from dual wielding, and Sixth Sense will give me dodge equal to 30% of my Crit Chance.
#6 AoE: Instant Karma will reflect back 50% of melee and projectile attacks while Serenity is active. Tons of Cyclones via high Crit chance. Seven-Sided Strike. 40%/80% of reflected melee damage via Mantra of Retribution.
#7: I will also have a constant +15% damage from Blazing Wrath buff.
#8 Defensive abilities: Breath of Heaven heal and Serenity immunity.

Sorry if it was long winded. It's my first posted build for any game. I would love some feedback on how to improve it. Or if it's just plain terrible; I'd like to know that as well lol.

Seems like you've got a little of everything in this build.

So far it seems like you have the following needs:

    Dex
    Crit Chance
    Attack Speed
    Vitality
    Duel Wield

On the surface this seems to play out fairly well with gear. However, if you're focusing on these stats your damage will suffer, making Blazing Wrath not worth it. I would even argue Breath of Heaven isn't worth it, unless you're focusing on a group dynamic. If so, then I would scale back your need to crit and proc and instead build up your defense/buffing potential.

I like the idea of AOE damage, as I think it's a less popular monk option. Something like a tandem of Inner Sanctuary with Sweeping wind would keep mobs in the area of the Vortex.

Personally I would decide what role you want, either Damage, Healing, Survivability, Dodge, and then determine what skills will support it. Spreading yourself too thin, may make you strong for weird edge cases but miss the bread and butter of getting through normal encounters.

Also like the damage reflect idea, but if that was the case, I would simply not focus on duel wield, attack speed or crit chance if I had reflect as my primary goal.

Try this out and see what you come up with it. Maybe the hybridization will allow you enough survivability for you to own that special case scenario you're trying to spec for.

Hi there, I've been level 60 for more than 2 weeks now, and I've tested quite a lot of different builds.
I recently supported one of my friends (who just started to play Monk (now 43) with an exelent leveling build based on my level 60 inferno farm experience.

The build revolves around dodge, aoe and stability.

    The build:
    - Weapon: 2x 1handers- Your setup: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#aigXQY!YdU!ZZaYbc

    Changes:
Depending on your playstyle you can change the following:
#1 Brathe of heaven rune --> rune Infused With Light if you need more spirit for healing

#2 When you reach level 58 change Mantra of Healing --> Mantra of Protection with Backlash (unless your group mates suck at staying alive)

    How to play it:
#1 Spamm your mantra as often as posible, it will heal you due to your passive, provide you with a shield and increase the healing over time effect a lot (at least use it ever 4 sek).
#2 If you go below 60% hp you use Breath of heaven, or when its buff runs out.
#3 You use Serenity to dodge crowd control or when your below 60% and Breathe of heaven is on cooldown, or your below 60% hp and can not afford to cast Breathe of heaven.
#4 You use Blinding Flash when ever you can.
#5 You use Sweeping Winds when there is more than 4 enemies to attack, or you got full spirit

In short spam activate sweeping winds, spam mantra, heal and blind - use serenity if low.

    Level 60:
When you get higher level you can perfect the build to this one, which im using to farm act II on inferno
    http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#aigXhY!YdU!ZZaYcc
(however changin the Mantra to healing with to Time of need if your team mates dont know how to stay alive)

    Good luck

ps. use narrow paths like doorways to 'tunnel' the creeps - having max 4 hitting you at once :)
